Josh Baer holds an unrivaled position in the art business as a trusted art advisor to world-class collectors, having completed over $500m worth of transactions.
Since 2020, with the support of investors LionTree and collector Glenn Fuhrman, The Baer Faxt has grown exponentially in size and scope. Josh now delivers The Baer Faxt’s news and commentary in a variety of formats that supplement the core newsletter, including video, podcast, live streaming and social media formats. In 2021, he introduced The Baer Faxt Art Advisory, a membership service that offers collectors individualized guidance and consultation. As the Baer Faxt enters its 30th year, Josh and his extended global team of art market experts continue to develop new content and advisory offerings to meet the needs of today’s art collectors.
Art, artists, and the art market are in Josh’s DNA; his mother is the pioneering Minimalist artist Jo Baer. His early career as a gallerist began at White Columns Gallery in New York, where he was director from 1979-83, before opening his own gallery in 1985, where he represented the artists Chris Burden, Lorna Simpson, Nancy Spero, and Leon Golub, among others. In 1994, seeing a need for an experienced insider’s view of the art market, he launched The Baer Faxt Newsletter, a first-of-its-kind news source for the art market. In 1996, he began tracking auction house transactions, ultimately recording more than 12,000 data points for what would become The Baer Faxt Auction Database – a trusted resource for buyer and underbidder data.
Fun Fact: Though he earned a master’s degree in Computer Science, Josh couldn’t resist the pull of New York’s legendary arts scene in the ‘80s. He rented an alternative art space, wrote for an arts magazine, and co-founded the rock label Neutral Records, ultimately releasing 14 records, including 2 by pioneering alt-rock band Sonic Youth.

Luyang oversees the company's strategic planning and development, international expansion, strategic partnership, and day-to-day operations. Since she joined forces with Josh, The Baer Faxt team has expanded the company’s representation from New York to Europe and Asia, introduced a new consulting division The Baer Faxt Solutions, and launched two popular additions to the Baer Faxt’s news format: The Baer Faxt Podcast and The Baer Faxt Live.
Luyang brings over two decades of leadership experience in strategic planning, business development, and multicultural communication across diverse industries, spanning Asia, the United States, and Europe. Luyang began her career as a journalist in China at 16, and by 19, she had become the youngest-ever evening business news anchor on China Central Television (CCTV). After earning a business degree from the University of California, Berkeley's Haas School, she worked as a marketing associate in a publishing company in Silicon Valley before she returned to CCTV and launched her own business talk show as Managing Editor and Host. Her professional journey includes roles in marketing and publishing in Silicon Valley, international investment banking in China, and a prominent European strategic consulting firm.
Leaving her journalism career, Luyang continued her journey in the corporate world. She was first recruited by CICC, the first international investment banking firm in China, and then as Head of Asia marketing of a prominent European strategic consulting firm. In 2012, she joined Christie's and played a key role in Christie's expansion into mainland China as Vice President and a member of the firm's Asia management team.
Before joining The Baer Faxt, Luyang ran her own consulting business in Germany, working with art world clients from Beijing, Hong Kong, London, and New York. Her clients included Phillips, Hauser & Wirth, and UCCA, and artists Zeng Fanzhi and Jia Aili.
Fun fact: In her adulthood, Luyang has spent almost one decade each living in Asia, the US, and Europe. While she is fluent in English and Mandarin, she's pretty good with German and is now learning Finnish by reading classic Moomin books with her daughter. Her favorite quote is when Moomintroll tells Hemulen, "You aren't a collector any more, you're only an owner, and that isn't nearly so much fun." Her favorite phrase in German is, "Steter Tropfen hölt den Stein," or the Chinese equivalent, "水滴石穿"; in English, "Persistent effort overcomes any difficulty." You can spot her carrying her Leica camera cycling in the city and the forest along the Baltic Sea.
