Sarah Thornton on her ethnographic observations of collector conduct

Sarah Thornton, author of Seven Days in the Art World, sat down with Josh Baer for The Baer Faxt Live from Art Basel in Basel, recorded live during the VIP opening of the fair.

Listen as Sarah shares her first-hand perspective as an ethnographer on how this year’s edition of the fair compared to her experiences attending Art Basel over the last 20 years. She reflects on the impacts of the pandemic on the fair’s social dynamics, observing a shift away from the earlier “frothy fight” of collectors jockeying to acquire the most in-demand artworks.
