Treasure Hunt: See the Locals

  • September 3, 2024

While it’s true that Tokyo’s museum and gallery scene is worth the visit alone, there’s no greater way to experience Tokyo’s art scene than mingling with local artists. Of course, with such a rapidly changing scene, that’s easier said than done. We’ve asked our expert guests to share the bars, restaurants, venues and more where the artists and thinkers defining Japan’s market are swapping stories and making connections.

Tohmei Diner / Lavender Opener Chair

5-2-18 Nishiogu, Arakawa-ku, Tokyo Japan
www.lavenderopenerchair.com

“Both a restaurant (Tohmei Diner) and contemporary art exhibition space (Lavender Opener Chair) this space located in Arakawa-ku offers plenty of surprises. The cuisine, influenced by the owner’s hometown of Yamagata, pairs perfectly with the distinct selection of Japanese sake—and the exhibitions never fail to impress. Having become a favorite spot for younger Japanese artists and curators, it’s also a great place to meet local creators.”

Aloha Whisky

Izumi Building 3F-B, 3-29-11, Nishi-Ikebukuro,Toshima-ku,Tokyo 171-0021, Japan
alohawhisky.jp

“Japan has become world renowned for its locally produced whiskey and there is no better place for an expert or beginner to get their fill than Aloha Whisky on the west side of the Ikebukuro neighborhood. Bar owner, Davis Tsujimoto is equal parts affable and knowledgeable; not at all snobbish, the bar can accommodate alcohol free guests as well. “

Hashimoto

2-5-7 suido, bunkyo-ku, Tokyo 112-0005
www.unagi-hashimoto.jp/english.html

“Tucked away in a traditional Japanese building, located near Edogawbashi Station, this Unagi (grilled eel) restaurant has been in operation since 1835. For a truly classic Kanto-style meal, this Michelin-recognized restaurant is perfect in terms of ambience and the quality of food. As a side dish, be sure to try the eel omelet.”

The Brown

〒150-0022 Tokyo, Shibuya City, Ebisuminami, 2 Chome−25−3, Ebisu Hana Bldg., 地下1階, Japan

“Every artist I bring becomes addicted.”
—Kyoko Hattori

Issei Yuasa

1F Art Square Nishiazabu, 1-4-22 Nishiazabu, Minato-ku, Tokyo

“You can enjoy the contemporary art collection of the owner while having a delicious dinner.“
—Takayuki Ishii

“The best way to see Tokyo’s future generation is to listen to music at a live music venue. There are also a few art schools in Tokyo—I recommend sneaking into the cafeteria at lunchtime to make friends with the students. If you get any warnings, just say you are preparing to study abroad. Try not to get caught!”
—Hidenori Ota
